Mrs Hinch fans today debated the best methods to wash and clean bath mats, leaving them as “like new”. Bath mats can get dirty quite quickly as they are used every time someone in your household showers, which means that multiple feet stand on them every day.
It is important to clean your bath mat regularly as it can start to get dirty or smell, or even change colour.
Some people have a cotton bath mat that you stand on when getting out of the shower or the bath, while others have a rubber bath mat that is kept in the shower or bath so that you don’t slip when washing yourself.
Meanwhile, some people have both of these mats.
Today, one cleaning enthusiast posted a cleaning dilemma to a Mrs Hinch fan page, asking other so-called Hinchers for their advice. They said: “What do people do to keep bath mats clean? Mine goes a bit black quite quickly!! I’m sure I’m cleaning it incorrectly!”

It was not clear if this Mrs Hinch fan meant their rubber or cotton mat, and so they were inundated with tips on how to clean both types of mats.
The post received more than a hundred comments, with people sharing their personal cleaning methods.
However, some methods proved to be more popular than others.
It seemed that one of the most commonly used methods to clean a rubber bath mat is to soak it in a little bleach and warm water before leaving it to dry, as well as scrubbing any residue off it with a brush.

One Mrs Hinch fan wrote: “I loosen it off the bottom of the bath then run some soapy water with a bit of bleach in and soak it for half hour once a week keeps in clean.”
Another added: “Do you mean the rubber type that goes in the bath? If so make sure you rinse after use and hang over side of bath to dry, turning over to ensure both sides dry.”
Instead of using bleach, one person advised using a mould removing spray. They said: “I’ve got a clear plastic one and I put mine in the bath and spray both sides with mould and mildew and leave for an hour and rinse off.”
Many cleaning enthusiasts highlighted the importance of hanging the mat up to dry after washing it so any remaining residue can drip off instead of collecting underneath the mat and in the bath.
However, one person had a handy tip that saves from washing the rubber mat at all. They wrote: “I stick mine on the tiles after every use so the water runs off and stops any mould.”
They added: “I got sick of cleaning it and one day I hung it there to dry and thought why don’t I just leave it there.”
Other Mrs Hinch fans agreed that this piece of advice was a “good idea”.
“Yes!!! My mum always did it so now I do. My partner’s head was blown by it,” one cleaning enthusiast wrote.
“I do this too,” another fan wrote.
To clean the cotton bath mats that are placed on the bathroom floor next to your bath or shower, most Mrs Hinch fans recommended washing it in the washing machine with your towels.
One cleaning enthusiast wrote: “If it’s the bath mat that you put on the floor, I hang mine up to dry and put in the wash one or two times a week.”
Another added: “I just throw mine in the wash once a week and hang it over the bath when wet.”
One person wrote: “Put in washing machine comes up like new.”
Some Mrs Hinch fans advised putting the rubber math bat in the washing machine too, along with your towels and cotton bath mat.
One fan commented: “I spray mine with bleach then rinse off with shower head then wash with other bath mats and towels – come out really clean.”
